Why are turkish people hating the french?

We planned to go to turkey. When online we find that many turks express dislike of the french. We don't understand why, as we live in australia and are not political. I am greek descent and my partner is French. Is it safe for us to visit turkey? as we love the people and the culture. We are reconsidering our plans. Are we doing the wise thing?
