Can I wear a thong when I have my period?

ok I got my period for the first time two days ago, and now i have gym tomorrow for school and you have to wear sweatpants but u can see the underwear line through the shorts and sweatpants so i want to wear a thong but idk if i can wear a pad cause i dont wear tampons yet can someone please help idk what to do :(
